Elk jaar in september staat Arnhem even extra stil.
De stad waar in september 1944 de Slag om Arnhem plaatsvond, vormt tijdens het Airborne weekend het decor voor herdenkingen, verhalen en momenten waarop we samen stilstaan bij wat vrijheid betekent.
Lest we forget.
Dit jaar staat Arnhem op vrijdag 18 en zaterdag 19 september opnieuw uitgebreid in het teken van Airborne. Van de John Frostbrug en het Airborneplein tot de Korenmarkt en het GelreDome: op verschillende plekken in de stad komen verleden en heden samen.
Vrijdag: herdenken bij de John Frostbrug
Op vrijdag 18 september vinden in Arnhem verschillende herdenkingsmomenten plaats. Zo is er de March over the Bridge bij de John Frostbrug, gevolgd door de herdenking bij het Airborneplein. Later op de avond vindt bij de Rijnkade, aan de voet van de brug, Bridge to Liberation plaats.
De John Frostbrug is misschien wel de plek die het sterkst verbonden is met het verhaal van de Slag om Arnhem. Hier werd in 1944 zwaar gevochten tijdens Operatie Market Garden.
Bridge to Liberation brengt ieder jaar muziek, film, dans en persoonlijke verhalen samen rond de thema’s oorlog, vrijheid en de impact daarvan op mensen. De voorstelling begint vrijdag om 20.30 uur en is gratis toegankelijk. (#intoarnhem)
Zaterdag: Airborne en Vitesse
Ook op zaterdag 19 september blijft Arnhem in het teken staan van Airborne.
Die dag speelt Vitesse de jaarlijkse Airborne-wedstrijd tegen Jong PSV in het GelreDome. De wedstrijd is een vast onderdeel van de Airborne-traditie van Vitesse. Rondom de wedstrijd wordt stilgestaan bij de Slag om Arnhem, de mensen die hun leven verloren en de betekenis van vrijheid. (Supportersvereniging Vitesse)
Voor veel Arnhemmers is het daardoor meer dan een voetbalwedstrijd. Het is een moment waarop geschiedenis, de stad Arnhem en de club Vitesse samenkomen.
En daarna?
Dan is het tijd om de stad in te gaan.
Van het GelreDome naar de Korenmarkt
Na een indrukwekkende dag vol verhalen, herdenkingen en voetbal is er natuurlijk ook ruimte om samen te komen.
De Korenmarkt in Arnhem ligt midden in het centrum en is dé plek om de avond voort te zetten. Even napraten over de wedstrijd, samen een drankje doen en lekker eten.

Every year in September, Arnhem pauses for a moment of extra reflection. The city where the Battle of Arnhem took place in September 1944 forms the backdrop during Airborne Weekend for commemorations, stories, and moments when we pause together to reflect on what freedom means. Lest we forget. This year, Arnhem will once again be extensively dedicated to Airborne on Friday, September 18 and Saturday, September 19. From the John Frost Bridge and Airborneplein to the Korenmarkt and the GelreDome: past and present come together at various locations throughout the city. Friday: Commemoration at the John Frost Bridge. On Friday, September 18, various commemorative events will take place in Arnhem. These include the March over the Bridge at the John Frost Bridge, followed by the commemoration at Airborneplein. Later in the evening, Bridge to Liberation will take place at the Rijnkade, at the foot of the bridge. The John Frost Bridge is perhaps the place most strongly connected to the story of the Battle of Arnhem. Heavy fighting took place here in 1944 during Operation Market Garden. Every year, Bridge to Liberation brings together music, film, dance, and personal stories around the themes of war, freedom, and their impact on people. That day, Vitesse plays the annual Airborne match against Jong PSV at the GelreDome. The match is a fixed part of Vitesse’s Airborne tradition. Around the match, there is a moment of reflection on the Battle of Arnhem, the people who lost their lives, and the meaning of freedom. And afterwards? Then it is time to head into the city.
